Living in the Future, not the Past

As most of you know, the first 5 months of 2021 have been very successful for us. Matt will share more details as we finalize the numbers from May, but we know that business has been strong across the company and everyone has done a great job pulling together and battling through this crisis. Our determination, decisions and strategy are paying off. But that is mostly about what we did in the past. Important and worth celebrating, but our determination, decision making and strategy are things we “already did.”

I want us to instead focus on what we will do. What we can do. Because I have always believed – and research supports this view – that the most successful people are pulled by the future, while those who are less successful are focused on the past. As summer in the northern hemisphere reveals itself, I am all about spending the summer helping each of you continue to build for the future. Finding ways to make constant improvement part of our DNA, not just a slogan. Part of that is innovation which includes process improvement and technology. But much more of that is found in consistency. In relentlessly doing the one or two things every day that we know make us better.

Aesop’s fable tells us slow and steady wins the race. People focus on the slow part of that fable, because it lets us off the hook. Even if I am slow I can win! But the most important word is steady. Because slow isn’t better and doesn’t win the race by itself. Slow is still slow. But slow AND steady separates average from exceptional. Steady makes the mundane transformational. Steady – relentlessly steady work on the small things no one else values or even sees – is how we achieve our potential. 5 more calls to clients or candidates. One more meeting. One more submissions. That is how we increase that gap with our competitors and Change More Lives!!

More to follow on the future. Including details on our meeting schedule for the fall and winter as soon as we have them (how is that for a Netflix style teaser??). I promise we will define what separates good from great in every business and help you do that every single day. While remaining a great teammate.
