What started as a cooking blog turned into a career for Vallery Lomas after she won on The Great American Baking Show. From that moment, she left behind her law practice to pursue her passion for food. Here are five things you may not know about Val and how a lawyer becomes a baker:
- Val found her way into the law because she had the personality for it. “I’m an advocate by nature, and I believe it is important to use my voice for those who can’t use theirs.”
- Even though she’s a baker now, Val will always be a lawyer. “You never shelve the things that you learn. I was a lawyer for eight years and completed three years of law school before. I still consider myself a lawyer because of how I think and process things. Writing a cookbook is such an insane endeavor, but the skill of going all out and full in as a lawyer serves you well in all things.”
- Baking was engrained into Val’s roots, since she grew up in the kitchen with her mother and grandmothers. “The interest was always there. My last year of law school I turned the interest into action. I’d blog while I was baking; it was an outlet for my creativity.”
- Her Instagram account caught the attention of the casting director for The Great American Baking Show.
“I had started an Instagram account, posting pictures of the food I was baking for my blog. I got a DM (direct message) from a casting director one day and then hopped on a plane to Los Angeles to audition. The rest is history.” - She loves making pies or tarts most of all. “They are really versatile, and you can take them places. I live in New York; no one wants to be on the subway with a cake.”
